Destiny's Child has sold more than 28 million records worldwide (more than 20 million albums and 8 million singles). To date, Destiny's Child has been awarded a total of 22 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certifications from the RIAA for: "No, No, No" (gold, platinum), Destiny's Child (gold, platinum), "Bills, Bills, Bills" (gold), "Say My Name" (gold), The Writing's On The Wall (gold, 8x platinum), Survivor (gold, 4x platinum), 8 Days Of Christmas (gold) and the video The Platinum's On The Wall (gold). Released to stores on May 1, 2001, Survivor, the third Destiny's Child album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart with the highest first week's sales figures (more than 663,000) of any female group in the SoundScan era and the highest first week's sales figures of any album in Columbia Records history. Survivor was certified double-platinum by the RIAA as of June 4, 2001, four weeks after the album's release. Four weeks after that, on July 2, 2001, Survivor was certified triple-platinum in the United States. As of July 27, 2001, Survivor has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. The Writing's On The Wall, the group's sophomore album, has sold more than 9 million copies worldwide. Released on July 27, 1999, The Writing's On The Wall was certified 7x platinum by the RIAA as of February 26, 2001. The Writing's On The Wall debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 Album chart. Nine months after its release, the album was #5 on the chart, having just experienced its best sales week ever. More than a year after the album's release, The Writing's On The Wall was still in the Top 20 (#11), selling upwards of 70,000 units per week. In the first year of its release, The Writing's On The Wall spent 47 out of 52 weeks in the Top 40 or better of the Billboard 200 Album chart. The Writing's On The Wall has generated three Top 10 hits on the Billboard R&B singles chart: "Jumpin Jumpin," "Say My Name," and "Bills, Bills, Bills," which spent nine weeks at #1 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart (longer than any other record in the #1 position in 1999). In the summer of 1999, "Bills, Bills, Bills" was the #1 song on R&B radio for four weeks in a row. Both "Bills Bills Bills" and "Say My Name" topped the Hot 100 and the R&B Singles charts. "Jumpin Jumpin," the fourth single from The Writing's On The Wall, has topped the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and Top 40 Mainstream Airplay charts as well as the SoundScan Dance Maxi-Single Sales chart; the record has achieved Top 10 or better status on the R&B Singles chart, the Top 40 Rhythm Airplay chart, the Hot 100 Singles chart, the Top 40 Mainstream Airplay chart and the Maxi-Single Sales chart. "Bills, Bills, Bills" secured two Grammy nominations for Destiny's Child: Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best R&B Song. "Bills, Bills, Bills" was co-written, in part, by Destiny's Child's Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland and Xscape's Kandi Burruss. Destiny's Child was awarded the coveted NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Duo or Group category for The Writing's On The Wall. Destiny's Child's videos have become mainstays on MTV and VH1, who featured the group on "Divas 2000: A Tribute To Diana Ross." "Say My Name" won the Best R&B Video Award at the 16th Annual MTV Video Music Awards. The group opened this year's Soul Train Awards and has appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Donnie & Marie," "Regis & Kathie Lee," "Rosie O'Donnell," and numerous other programs. Destiny's Child has contributed music to the hit soundtracks for "Men In Black," "Romeo Must Die," and "Life." The group performs two songs--"Independent Women Part I" and "DOT"--on the best-selling Charlie's Angels -- Music From The Motion Picture. Led by founding members Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland, Destiny's Child burst onto the music scene in 1997 with the multi-platinum single, "No, No No," from their self-titled debut album. Michelle Williams joined the group in February 2000. Classically trained as an opera singer since her pre-teens, Beyoncé Knowles is the producer of all the tracks on Survivor and co-wrote all of the album's songs (with the exception of the group's cover of the Bee Gee's "Emotion"). Destiny's Child toured with Christina Aguilera in Summer 2000. The week of October 24, 2000, Destiny's Child had two singles on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart: "Independent Women Part I" at #9, reaching 65 million listeners & "Jumpin Jumpin" at #5, reaching 75 million listeners. In 2000, Destiny's Child had three #1 records on the Billboard Hot 100: "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," and "Independent Women Part I." At the end of November 2000, during its fourth straight week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Destiny's Child's "Independent Women Part I" also reached the largest audience (140.4 million listeners) in the history of monitored airplay, breaking the record set in May 1999 by TLC's "No Scrubs." "Independent Women Part I" has spent 9 weeks topping the Billboard Hot 100 and 3 weeks as #1 R&B Single. When "Independent Women Part I" hit #1 on the U.K. charts, Destiny's Child became the first American all-female group to hold that position since 1989, when the Bangles hit it with "Eternal Flame." With "Independent Women Part I," Destiny's Child became the first American all-female group ever to debut at #1 on the U.K. charts. In December 2000, Destiny's Child won four Billboard Music Awards: Artist Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, Duo/Group, Hot 100 Singles Artist Of The Year and Hot 100 Singles Duo/Group Of The Year. The Billboard Awards honor the year's #1 artists and songs as determined by record sales and radio airplay. Winners were decided by the 2000 year-end charts compiled from Billboard's weekly charts published from December 1999 to December 2000. Beyoncé Knowles and Destiny's Child secured five nominations for the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards: Record Of The Year ("Say My Name"), Song Of The Year ("Say My Name"), Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal ("Say My Name"), Best R&B Song ("Say My Name"), and Best Song Written For A Motion Picture Or Other Visual Media ("Independent Women Part I"). On February 21, 2001, Destiny's Child took home two Grammy Awards: Best R&B Song ("Say My Name") and Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group ("Say My Name"). Destiny's Child won the Favorite Band, Duo or Group (Soul/Rhythm & Blues Music) award at the 28th Annual American Music Awards, announced January 8, 2001, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The trio was voted Favorite Singing Group in the 14th edition of the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The awards ceremony, hosted by Rosie O'Donnell, was held on April 21, 2001, in Santa Monica, California, and broadcast live on Nickelodeon. Destiny's Child was nominated in five categories--more than any other of that year's nominees--at the 7th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards: Favorite Group of the Year; Favorite Group, R&B; Favorite Group, Pop; Favorite Single (for "Say My Name") and Favorite Song from a Movie (for "Independent Women Part I" from the RIAA platinum album Charlie's Angels -- Music From The Motion Picture.) The group walked off with two trophies: Favorite Group of the Year and Favorite Group, R&B while Charlie's Angels -- Music From The Motion Picture won in the Favorite Soundtrack category. The Blockbuster Entertainment Awards ceremony was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on April 11, 2001, and televised on FOX. Destiny's Child were presented the prestigious Sammy Davis, Jr. Award for Entertainer Of The Year at the Soul Train Awards ceremony on February 28, 2001. "Say My Name" earned Destiny's Child the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo or Group presented on March 1, 2001. Destiny's Child headlined the first-ever MTV TRL ("Total Request Live") Tour, which kicked off July 18, 2001 at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York. In Billboard magazine (issued dated the week of August 4, 2001), the Destiny's Child single, "Bootylicious" hit the #1 slot on the Hot 100 singles chart. It is the group's fourth #1 record on the Hot 100 (following "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," and "Independent Women Part I"). "Survivor" peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 while two more singles--"No, No, No" and "Jumpin Jumpin" crested at #3 on the chart. In that same issue of Billboard (August 4, 2001), Destiny's Child's Survivor is listed as one of 32 albums to have achieved Top 10 chart status simultaneously in three or more of the 10 leading world markets--the U.S., Japan, the U.K., Germany, France, Canada, Italy and the Netherlands--during the first six months of 2001. Survivor peaked at #1 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands. The album peaked at #4 at France and Australia and #9 in Italy. Destiny's Child received two nominations--Best R&B Soul Single, Group, Band or Duo (for "Survivor") and Best R&B/Soul or Rap Song of the Year (for "Independent Women Part I")--at the 7th Annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. On September 6, 2001, Destiny's Child received the Best R&B Video at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. Destiny's Child performed at the Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary In Show Business Celebration at Madison Square Garden on September 7, 2001. Destiny's Child sang "Emotion," and "The Gospel Medley" from Survivor at the "Concert For New York City" benefit at Madison Square Garden on October 20 and performed "Survivor," "Emotion," and "The Gospel Medley" at the "United We Stand" benefit in Washington, DC, on October 21. On Friday, October 26, Destiny's Child took home the Artist Of The Year trophies in both the Top 40-Pop Radio and Hip-Hop/Rhythmic Radio categories at the 3rd Annual Radio Music Awards ceremony in Las Vegas. It was the first time in the history of the Radio Music Awards that a single act had won the Artist Of The Year in both categories. 8 Days Of Christmas, the Destiny's Child holiday album, was released by Music World Music/Columbia Records on October 30, 2001. Destiny's Child took home the Artist Of The Year trophy at the 2001 Billboard Music Awards ceremony held in Las Vegas on December 4, 2001. The group also won in the Hot 100 Singles - Artist Of The Year, Group/Duo, Hot 100 Singles - Artist Of The Year and Soundtrack Single Of The Year (for "Independent Women Part I" from the "Charlie's Angels" soundtrack) categories. Destiny's Child took home awards in two categories--Favorite Album, Pop/Rock (for Survivor) and Favorite Band, Duo or Group, Soul/R&B--at the 29th Annual American Music Awards on January 9, 2002. Destiny's Child took home Best International Group honors at the BRIT Awards ceremony held on February 20, 2002, at Earls Court in London. "Survivor" won the Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal award at the 2002 Grammy Awards ceremony held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 27, 2002. Destiny's Child won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo Or Group (for Survivor) at the 33rd Annual NAACP Image Awards ceremony which aired on the FOX Network on March 1, 2002. At the World Music Awards ceremony, held in Monte Carlo in March 2002, Destiny's Child won the distinctions of World's Best Selling World Artist/Group, World's Best Selling Pop Group, and World's Best Selling R&B Group. Destiny's Child won International Rock/Pop Group at the 2002 ECHO Awards ceremony held in Berlin, Germany in March 2002. Destiny's Child was named Favorite Singing Group at Nickelodeon's 15th Annual Kid's Choice Awards ceremony held in Santa Monica, California, in April 2002. Fans of Destiny's Child can look forward to upcoming projects from each of the group members. Beyoncé Knowles appears as Foxy Cleopatra in "Austin Powers 3: Goldmember," due in theaters on July 26. Included on the film's soundtrack album, due in stores on Tuesday, July 16, is Beyoncé's solo debut single "Work It Out." In April 2002, Music World Music / Columbia released Michelle Williams' Heart To Yours, an album of inspirational music while Kelly Rowland is working up material for an album showcasing her own hybrid of R&B/rock/soul. With "Independent Women Part I," topping the chart for 11 straight weeks (November 2000 - February 2001), Destiny's Child earned the distinction of having the single "Longest At #1 On US Singles Chart By Girl Band" and entered the "Guinness Book Of World Records" in November 2001. "Say My Name" earned Destiny's Child the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo or Group presented on March 1, 2001. |
