Biography

| | En Vogue | Hype is like oxygen for breathless record company executives, but they managed to burden this San Francisco vocal quartet with more unrealistic expectations than usual, calling them "The Next Supremes." But although the group has never managed to match that description (as if anyone could), En Vogue has fashioned a solid career that has resurrected the genre of all-female R&B vocal groups. It's hard to imagine outfits like Sisters With Voices or Xscape enjoying nearly the success they now do if En Vogue hadn't come along. In 1988, Bay Area producers Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster (who had worked with Timex Social Club and Tony Toni Tone) recruited Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones and Dawn Robinson for FM2, a concept album they were cutting for Atlantic Records. The four all had backgrounds in acting and modeling, but also possessed a collectively powerful vocal mix. McElroy and Foster scored them a deal with Atlantic, and produced their first album, Born To Sing. It yielded a monster hit with its first single, the restrained, hypnotic groove of "Hold On," which reached number two in July 1990. The group then showed off its sleek, sophisticated image in a Spike Lee-directed Coke commercial. En Vogue returned in 1992 with another huge hit, "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)"; the accompanying album, Funky Divas, introduced a more diverse sound on Top 10 hits "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and "Free Your Mind." A remix album, Runaway Love, kept the group's name before the public until a 1994 pairing with rappers Salt 'N Pepa, the sassy "Whatta Man," charted at number three. Ellis released the solo album Southern Gal in 1995, and Robinson left the group for a solo career. The remaining trio returned with EV3 En Vogue's third album, in July 1997, with the first single, "Don't Let Go (Love)," immediately climbing the charts. En Vogue is currently working a new album, though the single "No Fool No More," off the Why Do Fools Fall In Love soundtrack, has kept the trio in the spotlight as of late. |
