Mya is born in Washington in the United States in 1970. As a child, she had dancing lessons in a school. Turned teenager, she joins the dance troop of T.W.A. (Tappers With Attitude) then quits to go to study in New York at the Dance Theater of Harlem with the choreographer Savion Glover. Mya quickly becomes the protégée of her professor who gives her private tuition. Her father learns that his daughter wants to get into the music business and sends a demo which draws the attention of Haqq Islam. This last one makes her sign at Interscope Records. Mya releases her first eponymic album in 1998 with the collaboration among others of Babyface, Wyclef Jean, Missy Elliott and Sisqo. She signs two years later Fear of Flying where we find again Wyclef Jean. |
